When I first saw Meganisi Island, it was clear to me why it is considered one of the most beautiful hidden gems Ionian Sea. This small island, located opposite the port of Nidri in Lefkada, has become my favorite destination to escape from everyday life.
Thanks to its proximity Lefkada, Meganisi Island is a perfect day trip destination, although I recommend staying longer to truly experience the charm of this place. The island boasts of a beautiful natural environment – it is covered with lush greenery and its crystal clear emerald waters simply mesmerized me.

What particularly attracted me to Meganisi was the lack of mass tourism. This island is the ultimate destination for those of us who love isolation and privacy. The only way to explore the island is on foot or by private transport, as there is no public transport here - which I initially thought was a drawback, but later realized is actually the biggest blessing.
Main villages
The main villages of Meganisi are Vati and Spartochori, where I found the best accommodation. Vati is a particularly picturesque village that won me over at first sight! It stretches around the island's harbor, where a multitude of yachts and boats moor every summer, creating a cosmopolitan feel that contrasts with the island's soothing atmosphere.
Beaches I discovered - Meganisi Island
When we talk about the beaches, I have to be honest - they are mostly remote and unorganized, which is actually their biggest advantage. The most visited beaches that I explored are Agios Ioannis, Spilia, Barbareza and Fanari. However, the island is full of secluded coves that can only be reached by boat, and it was these hidden beaches that were my favorite finds.

Agios Ioannis Beach – Meganisi Island
This long beach is located 7 km south of Katomeri, the capital of Meganisi

Spilia Beach - Meganisi Island
Spilia is perhaps my favorite beach in Meganisi! It is located at the other end of Spilia Bay

Barbarezou Beach – Meganisi Island
Located 5 km east of Katomeri, it is also known as Cape Akoni. It is one of the least visited beaches

Fanari Beach - Meganisi Island
It is known for its colorful atmosphere, surrounded by lush greenery. It is located 3km north of Katomeri

Papanikolis Sea Cave – Meganisi Island

This cave was one of the highlights of my visit to Meganisi. Archaeologists believe that Papanikolis Cave was once a submarine hideout during World War II. It is ideally located, just 12 nautical miles from the village of Nidri in Lefkada.
The best way to get to the cave is by boat cruise from Nidri – the trip takes about 45 minutes and was worth every second. The sheer size of the cave is astonishing and I can say that as a first-time visitor I had a really great experience.
This cave is actually the second largest cave in Greece. It is not an authentic sea cave, but a karst cave that is currently partially flooded. Ships used it for protection during periods of bad weather, and it can accommodate large vessels.
When I looked at the island from the sea, I noticed that the whole island is really white because most of the coast is formed by white limestone cliffs. Papanikolis Cave is located in one such white cliff and is notable for its massive gateway to the southwest.
Church of Agios Ioannis
Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, this historic church is one of the oldest monuments on the island that I have visited. It is located on the western side of Meganisi, on the pebbly shore of Agios Ioannis beach, and is the only part of the monastery building complex that has survived to this day.
The small church was built before 1477, as shown by archaeological finds. I was fascinated by its story - it was previously destroyed by pirates, and the icon of St. John was lost at sea, but was later found by fishermen. Thanks to the contributions of the locals, the church was restored over the centuries.

How to get to Meganisi
Ferry trip - Meganisi Island
Meganisi is connected by ferry only to the port of Nidri on Lefkada. Ferry lines operate frequently, daily throughout the year, and the journey takes only 20 minutes - which I found very convenient.
Don't wander randomly! Read my article „Ferry ports of Greece“ and find out which ports are best connected, what they offer and how to choose the one that best suits your plans.

Air travel - Meganisi Island
There is no airport on Meganisi. Get closer located in Preveza, a small town on the Greek mainland in Epirus. Aktion National Airport receives flights from Corfu and Zakynthos throughout the year, while during the summer there are many additional flights from various European destinations.
It is important to note that there are no direct flights from Athens International Airport "Elefterios Venizelos" to Aktion National Airport. From Preveza you can easily reach Lefkada by KTEL bus or by taxi, as the island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. From Lefkada you can then reach Meganisi by ferry from the port of Nidri.
Accommodation I recommend
The most suitable places to stay are Spartochori or Vati - I personally tried both. These places have limited tourist facilities, but this is exactly what makes the stay authentic. Hotel units vary from small self-catering studios to luxurious private villas with hillside pools.
Wide selection of houses, apartments and villas for vacation that provide unforgettable experiences and amenities, including more space and added privacy, for less money than a traditional hotel accommodation.
It is important to note that there are no car rental agencies or public transport on Meganisi, so all transport must be done on foot or by private transport.
My impression
Meganisi Island is the perfect place for an unpretentious summer vacation. If you are looking for a destination away from the crowds, where you can enjoy the spectacular beauty of green landscape, crystal clear sea and peaceful atmosphere, this is the place for you.
The only activities I recommend are swimming in exotic waters and hiking through dense greenery – but trust me, it's more than enough to fully relax and recharge your batteries. Every time I return from Meganisi, I feel completely refreshed and inspired.
