Franchthi Cave in Ermioni, Peloponnese
Franchthi Cave, near Ermioni, is located near the village of Koilada and is the cave with the longest continuous habitation on record. According to the findings, this cave is believed to have witnessed human habitation through all phases of the Stone Age, starting from about 20,000 BC to 3,000 BC. Excavations from 1967 to 1976 revealed remains and cultural finds dating back to the Upper Paleolithic. Apart from these dates obtained by radiocarbon dating, the earliest finds are believed to be from the Pre-Neolithic era.
It is thought that the prehistoric inhabitants were probably hunters and farmers. Bones from the Paleolithic phase indicate knowledge of animal hunting and agriculture. Multipurpose cutting tools and a small scraper for removing the flesh from the skin were among the tools used.
The first human skull is dated to sometime in the Middle Mesolithic period. The skull belonged to a 25-year-old man who apparently succumbed to injuries caused by blows to the head. However, the most innovative and remarkable find from this period was the discovery of millstones made of andesite, probably transported across the sea from the Saronic Gulf. Advances in the domestication of animals such as sheep and goats, foodstuffs such as wheat, barley and lentils, as well as the appearance and use of polished stone tools characterized the early Neolithic settlement of Franchthi Cave.
Pottery, hitherto absent, begins in this period as well as ritual burials. A change in trends appeared during the Middle Neolithic, marked by fire-baked ceramics. The Late Neolithic is mainly defined by the change in painting style from matte to glossy. The final Neolithic is characterized by unpainted pottery with oddly shaped handles and a change in preference for plastic over clay. The definitive characteristic of the cave is that it provides an insight into the history of the world and mankind. The well-preserved condition of the cave and its findings testify to the progress of mankind over the millennia.
