When I first heard about Missolonghi, I had no idea that I would find real peace for the soul in this small town in western Greece. Although Missolonghi, Greece is known for its breathtaking natural scenery and historical significance, it has yet to be discovered by mass tourists. Being a destination off the beaten tourist track, Missolonghi has managed to retain its pristine charm that won me over completely!
Furthermore, thanks to its location, I found that Mysolonghi is the perfect base for traveling around the nearby towns of Nafpaktos, Patras, Thermo and Astakos!
Natural beauty that delights
Built around a beautiful sea lake, Missolonghi boasts a beautiful natural landscape and exudes a discreet retro charm that completely fascinated me. But Missolonghi is not only a place of incredible natural beauty but also of great historical importance.
This small town is famous for the exodus from Missolonghi, in the attempt of the besieged population to escape from the Ottomans in April 1826. During the escape, many people lost their lives. The Garden of Heroes, a beautiful garden in the center of Missolonghi, was built in their honor.

My favorite places
The Garden of Heroes is one of the best places I visited in Missolonghi. Not only because of its historical importance but also because it is a nice place for walks! Apart from the Garden of Heroes, I discovered many other places to visit in Missolonghi, such as Agios Simeon Monastery, Turlida Island and Kostis Palama Museum.
But sightseeing is not the only thing in Missolonghi! I visited the beautiful nearby beaches, I went hiking, I did water sports... The choice is truly unlimited!
How did I get to Missolonghi?
Traveling by bus from Athens to Missolonghi
There are daily buses from Athens to Missolonghi. My trip took about 3 and a half hours and went over the Rio-Antirio Cable Bridge. I caught the buses from Kifissos KTEL bus station (bus 051 Omonoia-Kifissos and bus Ks93 Athens Airport-Kifissos).
There are also buses to Missolonghi from other cities in Greece, including Patras, Ioannina and Thessaloniki. Bus schedules from other Greek cities may not be every day, but two or three times a week.
Traveling by car from Athens to Missolonghi
To reach Missolonghi by car from Athens, you need to take the Athens-Corinth National Road, and after exiting the Corinth Canal, follow the route that takes you to Patras. After that, you should ride the cable bridge Rion - Antirion and then follow the signs to Missolonghi.
Keep in mind that after Corinth the road becomes a bit narrow, so you have to be more careful when driving. The distance between Athens and Missolonghi is about 242 km.
In case you don't have your own vehicle, it's a great idea to rent one for your travels !
Where am I staying?

Several hotels in the city are convenient if you want to stay in the center, however, I had a means of transportation, so I opted for accommodation on the beach. I found nice places to stay at Krioneri and Kato Vasiliki beaches, a few minutes drive from Missolonghi.
In particular, I decided on Hotel Avra on Krioneri beach, which is only a 10-minute drive from the center of Missolonghi. This boutique hotel with a view of the sea gave me the perfect combination of comfort and proximity to nature. The room with a balcony and a direct view of the bay was ideal for morning coffee with the sound of the waves.
Alternatively, I also considered Villa Sunset on Kato Vasiliki Beach, which offers apartments with mini kitchens – a great option for those who like to cook fresh fish bought from local fishermen. This accommodation is especially popular with couples looking for a romantic getaway, as it is located in a quiet part of the beach with spectacular sunsets.
Troulida Beach - Missolonghi, Greece - my best experience

Turlida Beach is one of the picturesque locations of Missolonghi that delighted me. In fact, it is a small islet located about 5 km from the city and used to be an island where ships sought shelter before the construction of the port of Missolonghi. This use was due to the shallow waters that surrounded this area. However, since 1885 it has been connected by road with Missolonghi. Tourlida was named after the species of seabirds found there.

I could see funny shaped white herons near Turlid. They usually give a nice spectacle, because they come in flocks of 20 or 30. Apart from bird watching, the large waters of Turlide invite visitors to swim and relax. Besides, they are great for fishing and that's why I could find many fishing huts in the sea. In fact, there is a shallow area full of these water houses that includes part of the Ionian Sea and is home to one of the largest salt factories.
The whole environment of the beach is ideal for fishing, not only because of the geographical advantages that make it very productive in this case, but also because of the prevailing peace and the surrounding picturesque landscape. One of the best times of the day to appreciate such an environment is at sunset, when orange reflections color the sky and calm water. Tourlida beach is based on the facilities it belongs to. This settlement has many wooden houses, called pelades, as well as two bar-restaurants and a cafeteria.
Turlida Island - my oasis of peace - Missolonghi, Greece
The small islet of Turlid is located right in front of the town of Missolonghi, where the sea lake meets the Gulf of Patras. This islet is not inhabited, except for some fishermen who have small wooden houses and their boats there. Many visitors to Missolonghi in the summer go swimming on the sandy beaches of Turlide, as I did. In some places there are umbrellas for protection, but the region has no other tourist facilities. The water can be cold at times and I could see the Peloponnese mountains on the far side.
Villages near Missolonghi that I visited
The village of Etoliko (Aitoliko) - Missolonghi, Greece

The village of Etoliko is located 20 km northwest of Missolonghi, in the southern region of Etoloakarnania. It has about 4,800 inhabitants and is the seat of the municipality of Etoliko.
In the 19th century, in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, Etoliko went through three Turkish sieges, after which it became part of Greece. Etoliko is in many cases designated as a city, not only because of its population but also because of its location. It has its own high school, several churches, a small post office, a main square and an agricultural and trading enterprise.
However, this is no ordinary city, as its oldest part is located on a small separate island of the same name, connected to the mainland by two bridges, one on each side. As for the landscape of Etolico, it has rugged rocky hills in the east and green areas lined with farms in the west, roughly as far as the Achelos River.
The main attraction of Etolic, however, is its lagoon, to the east. This lagoon was created by an earthquake, and is actually divided into three parts. The Etoliko part surrounds the municipality and covers an area of 14 square kilometers, ending in the village of Stamna, south of the Ahelos River. The other two works are Mesologia and Kleisova.
The entire lagoon covers 131 square meters and is the largest in Greece, with a depth of 28 meters. Its total production is very rich, up to 800,000 kilograms of fish, 100,000 kilograms of eel and 1,500 kilograms of roe. The water in Etolikos Lagoon is sweet, which makes it better for fishing than the neighboring Mysologi Lagoon. Both lagoons have many wooden huts scattered along their waters. Large areas of the delta are under nature protection and hunting is not allowed.
Evinohori village - Missolonghi, Greece

Evinochori, also known as Evinochori, is a city located on the mainland of Western Greece, belonging to the southern region of Etolocarnania. Evinohori is located within the municipality of Missolonghi. In fact, Evinohori has about 1700 inhabitants, so it is considered the second most populous city in Missolonghi.
The river Evinos, which flows east of the city, gave its name to this settlement. Only in the late years of the 20th century was this settlement connected to these areas by an asphalt road. The inhabitants engage in the same economic activities as their ancestors, such as agriculture, fishing and the production of typical food products. Current residents have added tourism to this list, but fortunately, mass tourism has not arrived yet. So the place is pretty much untouched.
The place offers a peaceful atmosphere where I could try specialties in various restaurants in the city, or even play some sports in the two football clubs in the area, Calydona and Evinos. Those who love archeology may also enjoy visiting the ruins of a nearby ancient city called Calydona, which was once a famous and prosperous city in Acarnania, today known as Etoloakarnania. Some people claim that Evinochori is New Calydona, but a population survey would need to be conducted to confirm this for sure.
The place is really worth a visit, and as a tourist who came for relaxation and a peaceful vacation, I was not disappointed. The stunning views to the northwest of Arakinthos, the south of the Peloponnese, the east of Varasova left a deep impression on me, and it is no surprise that I plan to return again and again in search of solitude with all the comfort and hospitality of this small town.
Conclusion - Missolonghi Greece remains in the heart
My stay in Missolonghi was much more than an ordinary vacation - it was a real return to nature and to myself. At a time when we are all tired of the hustle and bustle of big tourist destinations, this small town in western Greece is a true refreshment for the soul.
What impressed me the most was the authenticity of this place. Missolonghi is not a place that tries to impress with luxury or spectacular attractions. Instead, it offers something much more valuable - peace, quiet and the opportunity to connect with nature and history in the most sincere way possible.
Every sunset on Turlida Beach, every moment of silence in the Garden of Heroes, every encounter with locals who have kept the warmth and hospitality of the old days - all this makes Missolonghi a place I return to in my mind every time I need inner peace.
For all those looking for a destination where they can take a break from everyday life, where they can enjoy simple things like beautiful nature, delicious food and warm people, Missolonghi Greece is the perfect choice. This small town taught me that sometimes the greatest wealth is in those places that have not yet been discovered by tourists.
If you are looking for your peace and tranquility, if you want to feel the real charm of Greece away from the tourist masses, Missolonghi awaits you with open arms. I guarantee that you, like me, will fall in love with this little paradise on earth.
