  • Katapola – glavna luka, sa tavernama uz more i ostacima drevne Minoe iznad zaliva.

Kada posetiti Amorgos i koliko dana ostati

Island Amorgos – History

The history of Amorgos begins many centuries earlier, as evidence indicates that the island has been inhabited since prehistoric times.

Cycladic civilization

Excavations have revealed that organized life existed on Amorgos from the 4th millennium BC, at the end of the Neolithic Age. During the 3rd millennium BC, Amorgos participated in the development of the Cycladic civilization: settlements and cemeteries, as well as twelve fortresses, were discovered. A large number of small works of art (ceramics, metal products, marble idols) found on the island show the cultural progress of the people and indicate that they were in frequent contact with the other Cycladic islands, as well as with Crete. At the end of the Cycladic period, the Cycladic civilization on Amorgos lost its strength due to the growth of Cretan supremacy in the Aegean. Since then, Amorgos became an important maritime trading post for the Cretans who controlled and colonized it.

Island Amorgos – Ancient times

During the Archaic period (7th-6th century BC), Amorgos was colonized by the cities of Ionia, which allowed the island to develop rapidly politically and socially. During the Classical Era (5th-4th century BC), the three cities of Amorgos (Arkesini, Aegialis and Minoa) functioned as a federation, engaged in manufacturing, trade and shipping. Its inhabitants took part in the Persian wars, especially the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, in which the island used one of its ships. In 478 BC, Amorgos joined the Athenian League. After that, like all the other Cyclades, it lost its autonomy and paid an annual tax to the Athenian state.

In 337 BC, the Macedonians dominated Hellenic affairs: Amorgos became part of their state. Disputes of heirs Alexander the Great they brought Amorgos under the influence of the Hellenistic state of Egypt, the Ptolemies. After the 2nd century BC, Romans have taken control of Amorgos.

Only with the decline of the Roman Empire, the three ancient cities on Amorgos lost their strength and were destroyed, which caused the deterioration of several monuments, such as the Hellenistic tower in Arkesini. It was in those years that Christianity was established on Amorgos and early Christian churches appeared. During the Byzantine period, the village of Hora was formed in the mountain center of Amorgos, in order to protect it from pirate invasions. In the 11th century, the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus founded the famous monastery of Panagia Hozoviotis. .

Island Amorgos – Venetian times

In recent years

Nije neophodan, jer autobusi povezuju luke, Horu i većinu plaža, a sela spajaju obeležene staze. Ipak, automobil ili skuter daje vam slobodu da obiđete udaljene plaže i jug ostrva.

Kada je najbolje vreme za posetu Amorgosu?

Kraj maja, jun i septembar.
