The European Strait - a phenomenon that troubled Aristotle

This is the reason why it is worth stopping in Halkida even if you are just passing through. Sea current under the old bridge it changes direction approximately every six hours. Water rushes through the channel at a speed of up to twelve kilometers per hour, first to the north and then to the south - and between the two directions it emerges an eight-minute break of complete silence, when the water simply stops.

The cause is the moon's gravity and the difference in sea level between the northern and southern parts of the Evian Gulf. The phenomenon also confused the ancient Greeks - Aristotle studied it, and legend says that he threw himself into the canal because he did not understand it. The legend is not accurate, but it describes well how persistent the puzzle was.

My advice: the appearance is most effective around the equinoxes, in March and September - then the current changes direction without pause and flows the strongest. The best place to watch is the old bridge, and that's why the waterfront cafes exist.

Three Evies: North, Center and South

Evia is over 170 kilometers long, so it is too long to go around from one base. In practice, it is divided into three units that are quite different from each other.

Northern Evia – spas and pine trees

The center of the north are the thermal springs of Edipsos, known since antiquity. They are with them Limni, a seaside town that most resembles a classic Greek island, and Lichadonisia - a group of islands called the Greek Seychelles because of the color of the water, accessible only by boat.

Central Evia - Chalkida and Antiquity

Halkida is a vibrant year-round city, not a tourist resort, and is the entry point to the island. Half an hour south is Eretria with an archaeological site and museum. It's on the east coast Hiliadu, one of the most beautiful and wild beaches of the island.

South Evia – mountains and wind

This part of the island is the least mentioned, and perhaps the most interesting. Karistos is a small town with a horseshoe-shaped arch and a fortress, at the foot of Mount Ohi. From here the path starts through Dimosari gorge, one of the most beautiful hikes in central Greece, which descends through the forest all the way to the sea.

On Mount Ohi there are also dragon houses - stone buildings made of huge blocks, the origin and purpose of which have not been clarified to this day. The south is also windy, so it is Marmari famous among fans of windsurfing.

Which database to choose?

If you want…Choose
Spas and relaxationEdipsos, north
Short trip from AthensChalkida and Eretria, center
Hiking and natureKaristos, south
Island atmosphereLimni, north
Wind and water sportsMarmari, south

Our recommendation: don't try to tour all of Evia from one base. The road from Halkida to Edipsos takes about two hours, and the roads are mountainous. Choose one part of the island for a week; for ten or more days, two bases - usually north and south.

Rent a car in Athens

This is the tip that saves the most nerves. The offer of car rental agencies on Evia itself is very modest, and the island is too big to get around without a vehicle. If you are coming by plane, take the car already at the Athens airport and cross the bridge - it's an hour and a half drive.

Before you book, check availability for your dates, because in July and August the fleet in Athens is quickly emptied. More about the rental conditions in the text Car rental.

Evia as a day trip from Athens

This is the least mentioned, but very practical variant. Halkida and Eretria are completely within one day from Athens - count six to eight hours.

Suggested schedule: early departure, crossing the bridge, an hour or two in Halkida watching the straits, then south to Eretria to the ancient site and swimming. You can make the return trip more interesting by going back by ferry from Eretria to Oropos instead of the same way.

The North is not for a day trip. Edipsos is about three hours from Athens, so go there only if you stay overnight.

When to go

The swimming season lasts from June to September, but Evia is one of the few Greek islands that makes sense in the off-season. Thermal spas are open all year round, hiking trails are most beautiful in spring and fall, and Halkida lives regardless of the month.

If you are interested in the European Strait, aim March or September. They are best for swimming. June and September.
