Thessaly Greece – surrounded by mountains and the Aegean Sea

When I first came to Thessaly, I immediately realized that this is a region of special beauty. Located in the north of Greece, surrounded by mountains on three sides and the Aegean Sea on the fourth. Thessaly, Greece gave me a feeling of both vastness and seclusion at the same time. Although foreigners mostly know about Meteora and Pelion, I discovered much more during my stay and fell in love with this area.

In the center of Thessaly there are large plains, because of which this area was famous for agriculture for centuries. Walking through the villages, I often saw endless fields and people cultivating the land, which gave a special warmth and authenticity to the entire region.

Thessaly, Greece – Climate

I experienced the climate as very diverse. It was pleasantly warm on the coast of the Aegean Sea, while in the interior, surrounded by mountains, the nights could be surprisingly cool. I remember that in Larisa I experienced the real summer heat, while in the villages on Mount Pelion I brought a jacket because the weather was unpredictable. In the plains, I experienced several summer storms - short but strong, which at the same time refreshed and reminded me of the fertility of this region.

Thessaly, Greece – History

What particularly fascinated me about Thessaly was its rich history and connection with mythology. When I stood on the slopes Pelion, I imagined centaurs, the half-man, half-horse mythological creatures believed to have lived right here. I also learned that the legendary Achilles had his kingdom in southern Thessaly, which was a special experience for me as a mythology lover.

Walking through the museums and reading about history, I learned that Thessaly was part of the Roman and Byzantine empires, but also that it endured severe Ottoman occupation for centuries. I was particularly moved by the story of the peasant uprisings in 1910 and the struggle of the local population for the land. That revealed to me how persistent and attached to their traditions this people is.

Geography and natural beauty

One of the most beautiful places I visited was Plastira Lake. Artificial, but so harmoniously integrated into nature that it seems as if it has always been there. The calm water and green mountains around it gave me moments of real relaxation.

Of course, they are unavoidable. Meteors – huge rocks in the middle of the plain, on the tops of which there are Byzantine monasteries. When I climbed up to one of them, the view was so impressive that I lost my breath. It is an experience I would recommend to everyone.

Pelion he showed me another face of Thessaly. In the winter I visited the ski center in Agriolefkes, while in the summer I enjoyed the beaches of the east coast. The sea had an incredible blue color, and the villages in the interior were real oasis of peace and greenery.

Nightlife in Thessaly

Thessaly seemed mostly peaceful to me, especially the smaller touristic places that are mostly family friendly. However, in cities such as Volos, Larissa and Trikala, I found many bars and clubs with a lively nightlife. I spent one evening in Volos, on the coast, in a tavern where they played live - the music, the sound of the waves and the local wine left a strong impression on me.

On Pelion, in places like Agios Ioannis, Milina and Platanias, the nights were relaxed – walks along the coast, bars with soft music and taverns offering local specialties. That's exactly the kind of nightlife that I like the most.

My impression

For me, Thessaly is a region of contrasts – peaceful plains and wild mountains, ancient mythology and modern cities, hot summer seas and cold winter landscapes. Every time I was there, I had the feeling that I was discovering a new face of Greece, perhaps less known to tourists, but precisely because of that, more authentic and worth exploring.
