Pelion steam train, Greece, Thessaly

Parni voz Pelion, Grčka, Tesalija

The legendary old Pelion steam train started operating at the end of the 19th century and played a key role in the development of Pelion and the whole region of Thessaly. After being abandoned in the years after World War II, a few years ago this train started operating again, connecting some villages in the area.

The Pelion steam train was designed by the Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico, son of the famous artist Giorgio de Chirico. Its construction began in 1894, and a year later the connection between the city began to function Hair, the capital of the region, with the village of Lehonija. This section was 13 km long and crossed two bridges, one over the Anavros River and the other over the Vrihonas River.

In 1903, the railway reached the village of Milies, which was 16 km away from Lehonia, making it a total distance of 29 km. It also crossed 6 arched bridges, five of which were completely made of stone, while the last one was made of iron. Truly a masterpiece, the entire railway line was used to transport goods and people on short day trips. As the years passed and technology developed, the Pelion steam train gradually fell into disrepair.

However, a few years ago it started working again, mainly as a tourist attraction and for sentimental reasons. Now it starts from the village of Ano Lehonia, passes through the villages of Agios Athanasios, Agia Triada, Ano Gacea and Pinacates and arrives at the village of Milies. At a speed of 25 km/h, the steam train crosses stone bridges and the breath-taking nature of Pelion, and each train station is of great architectural significance.
